Willunga is a town south of Adelaide, South Australia in the City of Onkaparinga local government area 47 km from the Adelaide city centre. Sometimes considered a part of the Adelaide metropolitan area, it is located within the famous McLaren Vale wine growing region. At the 2011 census, Willunga had a population of 2,416.[6]

Willunga is connected to the town of McLaren Vale by a cycle path running along a former railway line and is only a short distance from the beaches of Aldinga Bay. Willunga is home to many festivals, including the start and finish of the fourth leg of the Tour Down Under, the Fleurieu Folk Festival, Almond Blossom Festival and Willunga Christmas Tree Festival.

THE WILLUNGA BASIN TRAIL

The Willunga Basin Trail is a group working on bringing a concept trail around the Willunga Basin to fruition.

The 118km 5-day loop trail could be hiked using overnight stays in nearby accommodation. The route takes in Kangarilla, Willunga, Sellicks, Aldinga, Maslin Beach, Seaford Heights, McLaren Vale, the Onkaparinga River National Park. View map of the proposed route and stages.

They have been in discussions with the City of Onkaparinga since 2012. Public consultation has yet to take place before waymarking can go ahead. This will include at least two easements on private land to be negotiated as well as some trail improvements.

There is a walking group which walks on sections of the proposed trail and surrounds, every Friday morning.
